We have never hired a Magento programmer. Our Magento programmers have been trained and each brings unique skills to our team. Some guys focus on various frameworks, some guys are security experts and some are best with performance tuning. While we love Magento, we also love taking a break from time to time. Making a new application from scratch, allows us to step back and look at software development with fresh eyes. With our knowledge of not only why Magento is such a successful piece of software but also how it has been troublesome for us, we have been able to make some custom applications that really stand out.
Tools
At our core we are Zend Framework programmers. We also have extended experience with other PHP frameworks like Code Igniter and Symphony. We build for Mac, Linux and Windows. We know enough about mobile to do it right. We're good with design but best with e-Commerce. But maybe most importantly we're not afraid to focus on what we're really good at and that is working closely with other partners who focus where we are the weakest. We really want to do things right. If for some reason we can't, we'll tell you up front and are happy to point you in the right direction.
